Diane Marshall works full time in the state sector and is mum to two girls under 12. She also has time to run 10 to 15 kms each week…and the odd marathon. This is her 4th be active Corporate Cup.

MORNIN’ DIANE. ARE YOU FIT?

I’m doing pretty well at the moment, thanks, although I’m a little worried about a niggly knee. I spend quite a bit of time running on streets that over a period of time mustn’t be good.

ARE YOU A REGULAR GYM-NISTA?

No. It’s just not my thing. Treadmills used to give me a false sense of fitness security and I found that being able to run 5ks in the gym translated to about 1k outside. I wouldn’t mind doing the odd class which seems like fun but I can’t fit it in at the moment.

DO YOU PLAY REGULAR SPORT?

Not any more. I was never really a team sport girl but I used to play golf up until I had the kids but there’s no time any more. I also played a bit of tennis which I would really like to get involved with again…maybe when the girls get older.

SO TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE?

I lead a really busy life what with a full time job and a family so I can’t really find the time – although at the moment I’m not trying to find the time. I find running suits my lifestyle perfectly: my clubhouse and changing room is my home and I can do it before it the sun comes up or after the sun sets.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS RUN?

I started jogging at uni and never looked back.

WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND?

I’m an Adelady. School, then uni, then travel, then worked in Sydney, married and returned to South Australia.

TRAVEL ANYWHERE EXCITING?

I was based in London for 3 years but on my way home me and a friend did a through – Africa journey and stopped off in Kenya for a month or so. It was in Kenya that I learned about the Lewa Marathon and returned later to run my first marathon.

THE LEWA MARATHON?
It’s a marathon that take place in a northern Kenyan private game park raising money for conservation. You run on rough roads and armed rangers keep watch for dangerous animals. There are even helicopters on patrol. It was an amazing experience. Will you promote it?

WOW! ANY OTHER AMAZING MARATHONS

Actually yes. I ran the Great Wall of China Marathon a few years back. As you can tell, I like to do off centre sort of things!

HAVE YOU SEEN THE FILM GI JANE?

Ha Ha!

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE CORPORATE CUP?

I can’t remember. It’s something I have always known about but it took me a few years to enter. I love it, especially being part of a running family and sharing an experience. That’s what entering an event is all about for me – being part of a community.

WILL YOU BE TRAINING FOR IT?

Not specifically. It’s just something I do as part of my running regime.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME DIANE. ANY FINAL WORDS OF WISDOM?

Don’t know. Certainly, for me, running in a Kenyan game park was a life changing event. Put things in perspective!
